    What are 24-hour office chairs?

24-hour chairs have been manufactured to endure three 8-hour continuous shifts and usually come with multiple adjustments to accommodate various users. .......................................................................................................................................
How do I know I will be getting my office chair in exactly the fabric color chosen from the Discount-Office-Chairs web site?

This is an extremely important issue; because not all monitors have been set to the resolution that Office-Chairs-Discount has when we input the fabrics, although we have painstakingly taken every step to keep up with the most current out of the box settings from most computer manufacturers. You may also be using old browsers. So our suggestion is to request a fabric sample to ensure selection, (please note we do not send out samples unless it is a volume purchase). .......................................................................................................................................
    What is ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the study of the relationship between people and the tools of their occupation. In particular, ergonomics focuses on the physical interface between the worker and the way he or she uses the tools of their job. A tool such as a computer workstation is said to have good ergonomic design when it can be easily adjusted to fit the user. With good ergonomics, the user does not have to contort their body or perform repetitive movements in ways that could cause discomfort, strain, or injury.

What should I look for when buying an ergonomic office chair?

  • Seat height adjustment-This allows the user to adjust the chair so that their feet are on the floor, or the work surface or keyboard is at an appropriate height, or preferably both. Pneumatic mechanisms are preferred.

  • Seat depth adjustment-Achieved either by backrest in-out adjustability or a sliding seat pan, this changes the front-to- back depth of the seat. A shorter seat pan is necessary to allow small people to use the chair's backrest, while a deeper one feels more stable to taller individuals.

  • Backrest angle adjustment-This refers to changing the angle of the backrest relative to the angle of the seat. Backrest angle adjustability allows the chair to support different degrees of recline, which in turn transfers some upper-body weight to the chair backrest and lightens the load on the lower back. Backrest angle adjustability also increases the angle between the torso and the thighs, which causes the lower back to curve inward. This inward curve, called "lordosis", results in less pressure on the discs.

  • Chair tilt or recline-This changes the angle of the entire seat relative to the floor. As with backrest angle adjustability, a reclined chair transfers some upper-body weight to the backrest of the chair. There are two main tilt geometries. One is column tilt, in which the chair pivots at the top of the base post and lifts the knees slightly while the back descends. The other is knee tilt, in which the pivot point is forward of the post, nearer the knees. In a knee tilt chair, the knee lift is negligible, but the back (and head) descend more than in a column tilter chair.

  • Seat pan adjustment-this generally refers to changing the forward-back angle of the seat. It consists of a choice of fixed angle, rather than a free-floating recline. Often, this feature provides forward tilt, in which the thighs slope downward. The main purpose of forward tilt is to open the angle between the trunk and thighs, inducing lordosis and reducing disc pressure.

  • Armrests-These support the arms, reducing the work of the shoulders and upper arms. Armrests can, however, be used inappropriately by inhibiting free motion of the arms during activities such as keyboarding.

  • Height adjustable armrests-These help avoid the problems of too-high armrests, which result in elevated shoulders and pressure of the undersides of the elbows and forearms, and too-low armrests, which require the worker to slump or lean to one side to use them. Height-adjustable armrests also can keep armrests out of the way during typing or other activities requiring free motion.

  • Width adjustable armrests-This kind of adjustability changes the distance between armrests. Armrests that are close to the body can help avoid splayed elbows, which in turn cause the wrists to bend to the side during activities such as keying. A maintenance-adjustable mechanism requires leaving room for the hips and therefore does not permit the close positions.

  • Padded armrests-these potentially avoid uncomfortable pressure on the undersides of the forearms and elbows.

  • Lumbar support-This is intended to prevent, to the extent possible, the flattening of the spine that occurs in most people when in a seating posture. Lumbar support is usually done through gentle curves in the backrest shape.

  • Backrest height adjustment-This refers to a change in height of the lumbar support area of the chair backrest, although this feature is often interpreted to mean a change in height of the entire backrest. This feature accommodates preferences by different workers regarding where and how the lumbar support curve contacts the back.

  • Lumbar depth adjustment-This affects the size and sometimes the firmness of the lumbar support curve in a chair's backrest. Like backrest height adjustability, it accommodates different preferences and body shapes. .......................................................................................................................................
What are the ideal ergonomic physical factors for keyboarding?

Several physical factors, which affect a computer operator's performance and health, are described below. The numbered diagram will help you visualize these items.

    1. The chair should be easily adjustable to provide good support to your lower back and allow up/down movements for proper height interface with the keyboard. The seat pan should have the ability to tilt forward or backward and the chair should be fitted with casters if tasks require the operator to get up or move around the workstation frequently. (Be sure casters selected are appropriate for the type of flooring i.e., carpet vs. vinyl).

    2. Body posture should be as shown with right angles at the elbow, hip, and knee. The head should be held in a neutral position facing straight ahead with the eyes gazing forward or slightly down.

    3. A footrest may be needed when the operator's feet do not comfortably reach the floor, although this should not be necessary if both the table and the chair are height-adjustable. The feet should reach and touch the floor in a flat, relaxed manner. Foot and leg circulation will be affected if over extension of the feet occurs, as is the case when the user wears high-heeled shoes.

    4. The keyboard support table can be adjusted to allow proper upper body posture, or the chair height can be adjusted to achieve the same purpose. The keyboard should be detachable to permit flexible positioning. A wrist rest should be available for those who desire it. Keeping the wrist level straight and in a relaxed position offers the worker maximum comfort for extended hours of work.

    5. A document holder should be provided and adjustable in height and angle of tilt, to the same height and plane that the operator views the majority of the time. Usually the position will be at or just below screen level, allowing the operator to hold his/her head in the neutral position shown in the diagram.

    6. The display monitor (VDT) should be positioned so that the distance from the eye to the screen can be adjusted, allowing the center of the screen to be positioned so viewing angle is 15 to 25 degrees below eye level. Display monitors placed too low will increase musculoskeletal tension and fatigue to the back and neck. Display monitors placed too high will also increase visual fatigue and neck tension. The screen should be detached from the keyboard so that each can be positioned in an optimum manner. If VDT workers experience ocular fatigue and/or vision problems, they should see their ophthalmologist to rule out any need for prescription glasses.

    7. General lighting for the office and VDT work vary between operators. Light above and behind the display monitor will glare onto the screen. Reduce glare onto the screen by appropriate placement of the display screen in the room. The VDT workstation should be oriented so the operator does not face an unshielded window or a bright light source. The orientation of the video screen should be perpendicular or nearly perpendicular to the line of windows.

The screen should be tilt able to help eliminate screen reflections. Reduce mirror-like reflections on the screen by using an etched screen surface, a thin-film coating, or a hood. Using a neutral density, micromesh, or glare-resistant filter can reduce other types of reflections on the screen. .......................................................................................................................................
What should I look for when purchasing a training room chair?

Multi-purpose stackable chairs offer maximum flexibility. They can be reconfigured easily and stored efficiently. Some of our stacking chairs are designed/manufactured with comfort in mind for extended periods of sitting. We suggest you seek chairs with molded shells, flex backs, and in some cases tablet arms when required.

A task chair on casters with some ergonomic features is also suitable for computer training rooms. .......................................................................................................................................
What should I consider when buying conference/meeting-room chairs?

Chairs on casters w/ very basic ergonomic features offer comfort and the ability to pull up to the table to work. If keeping individuals stable or if budget is of concern, an armchair with legs or sled base can be appropriate.

Your main concern should be the arm height of the chair in relation to the height from the floor to the underside of the tabletop or skirt.
